The Art of Living with French Antiques

Beautiful things deserve to be lived with.

Beautiful World Interiors | French antiques, vintage interiors and timeless living

“I absolutely love it, but what would I use it for?”
It’s something I hear all the time. And for me, finding a new purpose for a beautiful old object is where the real magic of vintage begins.
A home shouldn't feel as though everything was bought from the same collection. It should feel collected over time, with interesting textures, natural materials and pieces that have their own stories to tell.
Often, we aren't simply buying an object. We're trying to capture a feeling: the warmth of a French country house, the calm of natural materials, the understated elegance of a beautifully considered interior.
The wonderful thing about French antiques is that they can bring all of this into our homes while remaining incredibly practical.
Here are some of my favourite ways to give beautiful vintage pieces a new lease of life.

1. Antique champagne buckets: beyond the champagne

An antique French champagne bucket is a wonderful thing to have when entertaining. But why should something so beautiful spend most of its life tucked away in a cupboard?
At home, I love using them as flower vases, decorative planters and kitchen utensil holders.
An arrangement of white hydrangeas in an aged brass champagne bucket can transform a simple table. Equally, a collection of wooden spoons and enamel utensils looks beautiful gathered in one on a kitchen counter.
For plants, I simply leave them in their original plastic pots, removing them for watering before returning them to the bucket.
It's this combination of beauty and practicality that makes antique pieces so special.

2. Vintage French baskets: beautiful, practical and endlessly versatile

If you know me, you'll know that I have a slight obsession with baskets.
I take them shopping, keep them in the car, use them for picnics and take them to choir practice. Given the opportunity, I'll find a use for a basket almost anywhere.
Beautifully woven vintage baskets have a craftsmanship and durability that I find increasingly difficult to resist. And unlike so many modern storage solutions, they're pieces you actually want to have on display.
Some of my favourite ways to style them at home include:
  • Rolled guest towels in a bathroom or spare bedroom.
  • Beautifully folded blankets beside a sofa or bed.
  • Seasonal fruit on a kitchen island.
  • Spare toilet rolls in a guest bathroom.
  • Even wastepaper baskets in bedrooms and home offices.
Yes, wastepaper baskets. A beautiful old basket with a discreet liner can be infinitely more charming than a conventional plastic bin.
Practicality doesn't have to come at the expense of character.

3. French baguette baskets: a little countryside charm

Traditional French baguette baskets are among those wonderfully specific objects that make vintage shopping so interesting. Originally designed to carry baguettes without crushing them, some even have additional compartments for croissants and preserves. Naturally, they look beautiful filled with fresh bread in a French country kitchen. But I also love repurposing them as home bars, unusual planters or decorative baskets filled with greenery. Sometimes the most interesting interiors come from using an object somewhere completely unexpected.

4. Antique French wash bowls: statement pieces for modern homes

Antique wash bowls were originally part of matching washstand sets, accompanied by beautiful ceramic jugs. Unfortunately, many of the more delicate jugs haven't survived, leaving their companion bowls without their original purpose. But these bowls are often works of art in their own right. A large antique wash bowl can make a spectacular fruit bowl on a kitchen island, a charming guest welcome basket filled with local treats and toiletries, or an elegant way to display rolled hand towels. My personal favourite is filling one with white orchids. It's a wonderfully simple way to create a substantial floral centrepiece without losing the character of the original piece.

5. Antique brass punch bowls: the art of entertaining

One of our beautiful antique punch bowls was originally silver-plated. Over time, much of the silver has worn away, revealing the warm brass beneath.
Personally, I think the brass is even more beautiful.
These generous bowls make magnificent vasques à champagne, holding several bottles on ice for summer evenings, celebrations and long lunches with friends.
When you're not entertaining, they look equally wonderful filled with seasonal fruit, vegetables or an arrangement of small pumpkins and gourds.
A beautiful centrepiece that changes with the seasons.

6. Antique grandfather clock pendulums: unexpected wall art

One of my more unusual loves is antique grandfather clock pendulums.
When an old clock is beyond repair, its beautiful internal components are often overlooked. Yet some of these hand-crafted brass pendulums have the most extraordinary decorative details.
I particularly love using them as wall art. They're ideal for those awkward narrow walls where a mirror feels too predictable and another framed picture doesn't quite work. A beautifully detailed antique pendulum introduces warmth, craftsmanship and an unexpected architectural element to a room.
Sometimes the most interesting pieces are those that were never intended to be decorative in the first place.

7. Vintage French glass jars: everyday objects as art

Vintage French glass jars are enduring favourites, and it's easy to see why.
Their beautiful colours, embossed lettering and wonderfully imperfect glass give them a character that modern reproductions rarely capture.
I particularly love grouping several together.
Fill them with pink peonies, white hydrangeas or freshly cut garden flowers and arrange them along a kitchen shelf or dining table.
They're equally lovely filled with wooden utensils, artists' paintbrushes or even a collection of vintage biscuit cutters.
A group of simple everyday objects can become a beautiful display when presented with a little imagination.

8. Antique storage jars: making the everyday beautiful

Not every antique needs to make a grand statement.
Sometimes the most satisfying pieces are those that quietly improve everyday life.
Our own antique storage jar sits on the kitchen counter, filled with cat treats for our rather insistent cat.
Beautiful old jars are perfect for concealing modern packaging while keeping everyday essentials close to hand.
It's a small detail, but those are often the things that make a home feel thoughtfully put together.

9. Vintage cake stands: not just for cake

I have rather a lot of cake stands. Entire shelves of them, in fact.
And despite my enthusiasm for cake, our house isn't permanently filled with it.
Fortunately, vintage cake stands have so many other wonderful uses.
A small pedestal stand makes an elegant place for keys in an entrance hall or jewellery on a bedroom dressing table.
Larger examples are beautiful filled with seasonal fruit, and a simple stack of apples can look surprisingly striking.
They create height, bring interest to a surface and give even the most ordinary everyday objects a sense of occasion.

10. Vintage garden trugs: from the garden to the kitchen

And finally, garden trugs.
Particularly old wooden ones. I find them almost impossible to resist.
They're sturdy, beautifully made and wonderfully versatile.
I love using them on kitchen counters to gather olive oils, vinegars and seasonings. They're equally lovely filled with fresh fruit and vegetables on a kitchen island.
In a bathroom, they can hold neatly folded towels. In a guest bedroom, they make beautiful reusable welcome baskets filled with thoughtful little treats.
They're hardworking objects that bring a wonderful sense of countryside living into a home.

A home collected, not simply decorated

For me, this is the beauty of living with antiques.
It's not about recreating a period interior or filling every corner with old objects. It's about finding pieces you genuinely love and allowing them to become part of your everyday life.
A champagne bucket becomes a vase. An old basket finds its place beside your favourite armchair. A beautiful wash bowl becomes the centrepiece of your kitchen.
Each piece brings texture, individuality and a little history into your home.
And perhaps that's what makes a collected interior feel so effortless. Nothing needs to match perfectly, because everything has been chosen for a reason.
At Beautiful World Interiors, we source French antiques and vintage pieces with precisely this philosophy in mind: beautiful objects, made to be loved and lived with.

Whether you're visiting our shop in rural France or furnishing a home further afield, we offer international shipping, including to the United States, Canada and Japan.
If something catches your eye, simply get in touch and we'll be happy to discuss the piece and arrange delivery to your door.
